word, that ye may grow thereby. (1Peter 2:1-2, KJV).
3.Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. (Psalms
119:18, KJV).
4.The word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that
heard it. (Hebrews 4:2b, KJV).
5.They received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
(2Thessalonians 2:10b, KJV).
6.Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (Psalms
119:11, KJV).
7.But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he
being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed
in his deed. (James 1:25, KJV).
Q91:How do the sacraments become
effectual means of salvation?
A:The sacraments become effectual means of salvation, not from any virtue in
them, or in him that doth administer them;1 but only by the blessing of Christ,
and the working of his Spirit in them that by faith receive them.2
1.So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but
God that giveth the increase. (1Corinthians 3:7, KJV).
2.The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting
away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,)
by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. (1Peter 3:21, KJV).
Q92:What is a sacrament?
A:A sacrament is an holy ordinance instituted by Christ, wherein, by sensible
signs, Christ, and the benefits of the new covenant, are represented,1 sealed,
and applied to believers.2
1.This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed
after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. (Genesis 17:10, KJV).
2.And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the
faith which he had yet being uncircumcised. (Romans 4:11a, KJV).
Q93:Which are the sacraments of the
New Testament?
A:The sacraments of the New Testament are, Baptism,1 and the Lord's supper.2
1.16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. (Mark 16:16a, KJV).
2.23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That
the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread, &c.
(1Corinthians 11:23, KJV).
Q94:What is baptism?
A:Baptism is a sacrament, wherein the washing with water in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost,1 doth signify and seal our
ingrafting into Christ, and partaking of the benefits of the covenant of grace,2
and our engagement to be the Lord's.3
1.Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. (Matthew 28:19, KJV).
2.Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were
baptized into his death? (Romans 6:3, KJV).
3.Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ
was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should
walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4, KJV).
Q95:To whom is baptism to be
administered?
A:Baptism is not to be administered to any that are out of the visible church,
till they profess their faith in Christ, and obedience to him;1 but the infants
of such as are members of the visible church are to be baptized.2
1.Then they that gladly received his word were baptized. (Acts 2:41a, KJV).
2.v7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after
thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee,
and to thy seed after thee. v10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep,
between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be
circumcised. (Genesis 17:7, 10, KJV).
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the
Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that
are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. (Acts 2:38-39, KJV).
Q96:What is the Lord's supper?
A:The Lord's supper is a sacrament, wherein, by giving and receiving bread and
wine, according to Christ's appointment, his death is showed forth;1 and the
worthy receivers are, not after a corporal and carnal manner, but by faith, made
partakers of his body and blood, with all his benefits, to their spiritual
nourishment, and growth in grace.2
1.And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying,
This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise
also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood,
which is shed for you. (Luke 22:19-20, KJV).
2.The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of
Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
(1Corinthians 10:16, KJV).
Q97:What is required to the worthy
receiving of the Lord's supper?
A:It is required of them that would worthily partake of the Lord's supper, that
they examine themselves of their knowledge to discern the Lord's body,1 of their
faith to feed upon him,2 of their repentance3, love,4 and new obedience;5 lest,
coming unworthily, they eat and drink judgment to themselves.6
1.28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink
of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh
damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. (1Corinthians 11:28-29,
KJV).
2.5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith. (2Corinthians 13:5a, KJV).
3.If we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (1Corinthians 11:31, KJV).
4.When ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you.
v20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the
Lord's supper. (1Corinthians 11:18, 20, KJV).
5.Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven
of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
(1Corinthians 5:8, KJV).
6.Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord,
unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. (1Corinthians
11:27, KJV).
Q98:What is prayer?
A:Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God1 for things agreeable to his
will,2 in the name of Christ,3 with confession of our sins,4 and thankful
acknowledgment of his mercies.5
1.Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a
refuge for us. (Psalms 62:8, KJV).

thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. (Philippians 4:6, KJV).
Q99:What rule hath God given for our
direction in prayer?
A:The whole Word of God is of use to direct us in prayer;1 but the special rule
of direction is that form of prayer which Christ taught his disciples, commonly
called The Lord's Prayer.2
1.And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing
according to his will, he heareth us. (1John 5:14, KJV).
2.After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed
be thy name, &c. (Matthew 6:9, KJV).
Q100:What doth the preface of the
Lord's prayer teach us?
A:The preface of the Lord's prayer, [which is, Our Father which art in heaven,]
teacheth us to draw near to God with all holy reverence and confidence,1 as
children to a father,2 able and ready to help us;3 and that we should pray with
and for others.4
1.Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold,
see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people. (Isaiah 64:9, KJV).
2.If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how
much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
(Luke 11:13, KJV).

received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. (Romans 8:15, KJV).

thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. (Ephesians
6:18, KJV).
Q101:What do we pray for in the first

(Psalms 51:18, KJV).
3.Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free
course, and be glorified, even as it is with you. (2Thessalonians 3:1, KJV).
Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be
saved. (Romans 10:1, KJV).
4.He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so,
come, Lord Jesus. (Revelation 22:20, KJV).
Q103:What do we pray for in the third
petition?
A:In the third petition, [which is, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in
heaven,] we pray, That God, by his grace, would make us able and willing to
know, obey,1 and submit to his will in all things,2 as the angels do in heaven.3
1.Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with
my whole heart. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I
delight. Incline my heart unto thy testimonies. (Psalms 119:34-36a, KJV).
2.And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be
done. (Acts 21:14, KJV).

works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul. (Psalms 103:20,
22, KJV).
Q104:What do we pray for in the fourth

90:17, KJV).
Q105:What do we pray for in the fifth
petition?
A:In the fifth petition, [which is, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive
our debtors,] we pray, That God, for Christ's sake, would freely pardon all
our sins;1 which we are the rather encouraged to ask, because by his grace we
are enabled from the heart to forgive others.2

deliver us from evil,] we pray, That God would either keep us from being
tempted to sin,1 or support and deliver us when we are tempted.2

Q107:What doth the conclusion of the
Lord's prayer teach us?
A:The conclusion of the Lord's prayer, [which is, For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, for ever, Amen.] teacheth us, to take our
encouragement in prayer from God only,1 and in our prayers to praise him,
ascribing kingdom, power, and glory to him.2 And in testimony of our desire, and
assurance to be heard, we say, Amen.3
1.We do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but
